Q: My documents have a Security Endorsement, what does this mean?

A: The E4 Security Endorsement is triggered when you state on your policy details that your bike is fitted with an approved security device. This could be an alarm/immobiliser, mechanical locking device or security identification.

The endorsement is instructing you to use the devices when the bike is parked.

If the security devices you have listed are not being used, there will be no cover for theft or attempted theft.

E.g. If you have a heavy-duty chain which you only use when the bike is parked at home, as you cannot carry it around, but you also use an approved disc-lock wherever the bike is parked away from home - then please list the disc-lock.

Even if you have only listed security marking as a theft-deterrent, this endorsement will automatically be applied although, unlike alarms and locks, they cannot be deactivated or left at home.

security endorsement devices E4 theft lock chain immobiliser alarm

Q: What does a Garage Endorsement mean?

A: If you have told us that you keep your bike in a garage at your home address, there will be a garage endorsement on your policy.

If your bike is at home overnight, please put it in the garage.

If your bike was stolen from near your house, and it was not in the garage (e.g. on the road outside or on the driveway) between 22:00 and 06:00 only you would be required to pay an extra £250 excess towards the claim. This amount is in addition to any other excess(es) shown in the schedule.

If you are away from home, and there is no garage available, this endorsement is not applicable.

This endorsement is only applicable within the proximity of your private dwelling.

Q: Can I ride other bikes? Am I covered third party to ride any bike? Can I ride a friend’s bike? Can I get temporary cover on someone else’s bike?

A: No.

We do not provide a 'Riding Other Bikes' extension on the policy.

The 'Riding of any bike not belonging to the policyholder' cover was originally designed for emergency use only and misuse has resulted in an increase in claims due to riders having a go on an unfamiliar bike and then crashing it (eg, someone who has just passed their test riding their mate's R1).

This in turn would have a knock on effect to all policy holders and increase insurance premiums - which is something we all want to avoid!

At eBike, we are trying to minimise costs to provide realistic premiums - if we introduce this cover across the board, premiums will go up for everyone.

We are however looking to introduce a scheme whereby people who want this cover can pay an extra premium to have it - this is still some way off though.

A: No. As Direct Debit is a Credit Agreement, we cannot offer this to a policyholder aged under 18 - however you may pay monthly using a debit card on a Pay As You Go policy.

Q: Can I put Classic bikes and Modern (Standard) bikes on the same policy?

A: If you have a bike registered more than 20 years ago, we would class it as a “Classic”.

Our Classic policy covers bikes registered between 1920 and 1988; our Standard and PAYG policies cover bikes registered from 1970 to present.

If you have a modern bike and a classic bike which is registered pre 1970, the Classic would need to be on a separate policy.

If your Classic bike is registered between 1970 and 1988, you may add it to either a Classic policy or a Standard/PAYG policy.

Standard and PAYG policies can cover up to 4 bikes. Our Classic policy is currently single vehicle only.

Q: Can I have two bikes on the same policy but at different levels of cover?

A: No.

You can insure up to 4 bikes on the Standard and Pay As You Go Products (provided that the vehicles are acceptable to our Underwriters), but the cover relates to the policy and not individual bikes.

Q: My policy has not started yet but I want to make changes to it?

A: If there is a delay between when you purchased the policy and the start date, the policy is “frozen” during this time and changes cannot be made before the policy becomes active.

There are two options available:

1- Wait until after your policy has begun, and then make the amendments online yourself. You will receive two sets of documents, the originals and an amended set. The first set can be destroyed or retuned once the replacements are received.

2- We can cancel your policy - this will generate a full refund of your premium, this will take up to three working days to clear back to your card (you will not incur any charges for this as your policy has not yet begun). You would then be required to set up a new policy via the online quote system inputting the correct details and entering your payment details again.

You cannot make changes after you have clicked "Buy Now". You should not click the "Buy Now" button until you are sure all the details are correct.

Please email us on enquiries@ebikeinsurance.co.uk or telephone the Helpdesk if you require more assistance.

Q: What is a voluntary excess? What is a Compulsory excess? How do I find out my excess?

A: An excess is the amount you must pay towards an applicable claim. The reason for this is to prevent lots of small claims which would increase insurance premiums for everyone.

During the quote process, please click on “View Excesses and Endorsements” to view your total excess amount. This is found on the quote screen above your premium amount.

The excess on a comprehensive policy is split between compulsory excess and voluntary excess:

-The compulsory excess is an amount that cannot be changed; it is dictated by the grouping of your vehicle.

-The voluntary excess can be changed to an amount between £0 to £500, this will affect the premium. E.g. if someone has a very high premium, they may opt to pay a higher excess in order to reduce their premium.

Please note that if you select £0 voluntary excess, there will still be a compulsory excess on the policy.

If your policy is already running, please refer to your policy documents for details of your excesses and endorsements.
